suburban secrets
“Each morning I open my curtains and see my next-door neighbour hanging out some washing and looking up at my bedroom window. I’m sure they’re the same clothes she put out yesterday…”
The Suburban Secrets project explores interactions in suburbia. This project follows on from an earlier ‘design research’ project looking at local issues in a suburban community and which culminated with the net://pot.plant networked object – a design for neighbours who don’t get on.

Designs for Nosey Neighbours
Leylandii2
Concept enclosure for the more daring nosey neighbour. The Leylandii is one of the most controversial issues in suburbia (see this article) and has, on occasions, led to both suicide and murder. The Leylandii2 goes one step further! The enclosure can be either ‘grown’ using a number of vertical segments or replaced at intervals for a larger model (changes to the structure should only be attempted when the neighbours are away or at night-time). The larger Leylandii2 models can house various surveillance equipment such as CCTV and audio equipment.

The Washing Line
How can common objects of the suburbs be used in secret surveillance operations?
Camouflage for Neighbours
A range of clothing to be used by both nosey neighbours and their victims to minimise the likelihood of being spotted.
The Semi + Glass
Podcasts of recorded arguments, private conversations and other intimate moments are played remotely through The Glass. For use as a therapeutic device either for those weaning themselves off the addiction of eavesdropping or during times when the neighbours are out or being very quiet.
